You are invited to join us for a special evening of music, dinner, and conversation at Louisville’s Arthur Street Hotel (ASH) on Saturday, May 9th. The hotel is a trailblazing ‘housing first’ program operated by Community Advocates for Resources and Empowerment (C.A.R.E.). It provides low-barrier transitional housing and critical wraparound supports that prioritize safety and relationships as guests work toward stability following chronic houselessness.
Over the past year, a remarkable partnership has quietly taken shape: one that brings together the Louisville Orchestra, ASH guests and staff, local social service and global public health nonprofits, a former LO Creators Corps composer, and a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist.
The resulting work in progress is The Arthur Street Hotel Passion, a multimedia oratorio for full orchestra and choir rooted in the stories of the people who call the hotel home. Born of a collaboration between composer Baldwin Giang (LOCC 2024-25) and photographer Jon Cherry, this multimedia performance piece invites C.A.R.E. staff and ASH guests to serve as lyricists, amplifying their voices and stories of resilience, care, and community.
On May 9th, this partnership presents a musical program designed to bring together ASH guests and those who care about Louisville, housing, and the power of art to bear witness. The evening begins with a short musical program reflecting on the meaning of home in Western classical music, featuring works by Johannes Brahms and Lori Laitman. Then we will share an exclusive preview excerpt of The Arthur Street Hotel Passion in a chamber ensemble arrangement, performed by members of the Louisville Orchestra and nationally recognized vocalists. The event concludes with a free hot dinner, catered by Feed Louisville, followed by intimate small-table conversation guided by members of the creative team, bringing hotel guests and staff into fellowship with attendees.
